There is no bad weather…

There’s only bad gear.  At least that’s what the adage says.  Ok, so maybe there is some bad weather, but that doesn’t have to stop you from pushing the pedals.  Here are some helpful hints on how to gear up for the elements and the frigid temps:

1. Keep hands and feet warm.  Here at Criterium we have several cold-weather gloves to keep the fingers warm and dry.  A summer weight long-finger glove won’t do when  the temps drop.  Try the Pearl Izumi Cyclone glove or the Specialized Deflect glove.  For the coldest of days, check out the Pearl Izumi PRO Barrier glove or the Specialized Subzero glove, both insulated with Primaloft.  On your feet, use shoe covers or toe warmers.  We have several to choose from by Pearl Izumi, Specialized, and Planet Bike. For even more protection, try the thermal Defroster mountain bike shoe from Specialized.  Keep the toes toasty by pulling on a pair of Save Our Soles merino wool socks or the Cannondale logo Woolie Boolies by DeFeet.

2. Dress in layers.  A long-sleeved jersey is better paired with a shell.  We have softshells and windbreaker jackets from Pearl Izumi, Royal, Specialized, Mavic, and Cannondale. Knee warmers, leg warmers, and arm warmers are good options for days when frosty mornings turn into warm afternoon. Long pants and cycling tights are essential on the coldest of days.  Check out our selection from Specialized, Cannondale, Pearl Izumi and Hincapie.

3. See and be seen. As temps drop so does the amount of daylight.  Early morning and evening commutes call for lights.  Make sure to use a taillight and headlight.  Stop in to see our selection of lights from Lezyne. They come with a rechargeable battery and range in brightness from 200 to 1200 lumens.  Another option for nighttime singletrack adventures is the NiteRider Mini Newt which cranks out 750 lumens.  We also have a selection of “be-seen” gear including reflective vests, reflective ankle straps, and fluorescent jackets.

4. Don’t stop dreaming of warm days.  Seasons change quickly.  Before we know it, we’ll be talking about how hot it is again.  Stock up on warm-weather essentials from our closeout racks.  You’ll find deep discounts on short-sleeved jerseys and shorts from Troy Lee Designs, Race Face, Pactimo, and others.

All of our staff here at Criterium are year-round riders and regular commuters who are here to answer any questions you might have.

Don’t let cold temps slow you down.  With the right gear and some planning, you can keep the wheels spinning outside this winter!
